Discover Why Anti-Aging Treatments Work
Most people have heard of anti-aging treatments, but they can come across as too good to be true. This is especially true when patients do not realize what makes them look older and what these treatments can do to reverse that process. We take the time to inform patients, discuss options in detail and answer any questions they have. This helps patients be more comfortable with the process and understand what to expect from the results.
For anyone who has not visited our office yet, here are a few things to know about anti-aging procedures and why they are so effective.
Skin becomes damaged over time
Consider all the elements skin is exposed to. Sun, wind, chemicals in makeup and lotions, harsh soaps, etc. can all begin to damage the skin. The longer a person lives, the more harmful elements their skin will be exposed to and the more likely that their skin will become damaged. Therefore, it is common for a person to suffer things like age or sun spots as they get older.
Typically, only the top layer of skin gets damaged
The good news is that the top layer of the skin is going to suffer the most damage because it comes in direct contact with the sun, chemicals, harsh soaps, etc. Procedures and treatments that help remove that surface layer of skin can be used to expose the healthy and more youthful-looking skin underneath the surface. Therefore, procedures like laser therapies are incredibly effective. They can remove the top layer, expose the bright and healthy skin underneath and simultaneously increase the production of collagen and elastin. This works to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and make the skin appear firmer.
What about tone?
While it is important to improve the appearance of skin, what about its tone and texture? Without focusing on these issues, the skin will still look old because it could sag or be droopy. In this situation, anti-aging treatments that focus on the creation of elastin and collagen will be the most effective. Some options can use light therapy to achieve these results, while other treatments use lasers. Many patients prefer light therapy because it is a noninvasive way to improve the tone and texture of their skin. Keep in mind that elastin and collagen is responsible for younger people having tight and firm skin tone, so the more that is created, the more youthful a person will appear.
There are options to reduce wrinkles as well
Once the surface of the skin no longer looks damaged or dull and the tone of the skin is also improved, it becomes important to address any wrinkles that remain. Some will become less obvious with the types of treatments already mentioned. Still, for those who have fine lines and wrinkles afterward, it may be best to try something like Botox® or a dermal filler.
These anti-aging treatments work incredibly well. Botox® works by helping the muscles underneath the skin to relax. This prevents wrinkles from showing on the surface. A filler like Juvéderm® can plump the skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles as well. Both are effective, so which one is recommended will be based on what is causing wrinkles, along with the recommendation of a specialist.
Anti-aging treatments have their foundation in scientific principles
Ultimately, all these treatments work because of the science behind them. Whether someone needs to bring out the freshness of their skin, cause the muscles under the surface of the skin to relax or create more elastin and collagen, these solutions can be incredibly effective and help turn back the clock.
