What Are Warts?

Warts are caused by a form of the human papillomavirus. The virus is typically contracted by contact with surfaces or substances that have been infected, usually through breakages in the sufferer’s skin. The HPV infection results in small, tough skin growths that, while similar to the skin surrounding it, nevertheless stand out.

Typically, there are no additional symptoms to warts other than their generally unpleasant appearance. However, warts present on the feet, such as plantar warts, or on the hands can cause pain. Most warts will actually clear up without treatment over the course of a couple of months, however waiting might not always be feasible and certain warts may be more resilient than others.
